Communication & Managing Expectations | Grace Legal

Strong professional relationships are not formed by chance.

For me, effective collaboration with a client hinges on clear communication and setting expectations right from the start.

This doesn't imply having all the answers at once.

It means being transparent about what I know, what I don’t know, what I require from the client, what I can realistically deliver, and when they can expect updates from me.

Communication goes beyond just replies

Effective communication is more than just responding to emails.

It involves keeping everyone informed.

If circumstances change, I believe the client should be updated.

If I need additional information, I will ask for it.

If a task takes longer than expected, I will clarify the reasons.

If I think a different approach would be more suitable, I will suggest it.

And if I believe I am not the best fit for their needs, I will be upfront about that as well.

I prefer to engage in open conversations early on rather than letting uncertainty grow.

Managing expectations is a two-way street

I also believe that expectations should be clearly defined on both sides.

Clients should understand what they can expect from me, and I need to know what I require from them.

This includes agreeing on the scope, timelines, priorities, and the information necessary to advance the matter.

Sometimes, delays occur not because someone isn't working diligently, but due to outstanding information, changing circumstances, or unforeseen issues.

Effective communication helps manage these situations more smoothly.

Things don’t always go as planned

No matter how organised you are, unexpected events can arise.

Deadlines may need to be adjusted.

A situation may become more complex than initially anticipated.

New information may alter the advice or strategy.

I don’t think professionalism means ignoring these challenges.

I believe it means communicating them clearly and promptly.

Clients should never have to wonder about the status of their matters or repeatedly chase for updates.

Communication is integral to my service

For me, communication is not an optional extra.

It is a fundamental part of the service I provide.

Clients trust me with matters that are significant to them, and they deserve to know where things stand and what the next steps are.

Sometimes, a simple message like:

"I've received this and I'm reviewing it. I’ll get back to you by Friday." can make a world of difference.

It provides clarity.

It sets expectations.

And, most importantly, it fosters trust.

My approach

I believe in keeping communication straightforward.

My goal is to be clear, realistic, responsive, and honest.

I won’t make promises just to please; I will clearly outline what I can do, what I need, the likely timelines, and any limitations.

If circumstances change, I will communicate that rather than leaving you.
